    How Ledger Recover works, mechanically

    1. You subscribe on ledger.com/recover and complete ID verification (passport or driver's licence + selfie).
    2. The Ledger's secure element encrypts your 24-word seed.
    3. The encrypted seed is split into three shards using Shamir Secret Sharing (2-of-3).
    4. Each shard is sent to a different custodian: Ledger, Coincover, and EscrowTech. Each custodian holds their shard in a Hardware Security Module (HSM).
    5. If you lose your device AND paper backup: you complete ID verification with any two custodians. They release their shards. A new Ledger reconstructs the seed.

    Alternatives to Ledger Recover

    1. Ledger Recovery Key (one-time cost)

Introduced with the Nano Gen5. A physical NFC card that stores your seed in encrypted form. Tap the card to a Ledger to restore. One-time purchase (~US$79), no subscription. Better for one-off inheritance planning where you also give your heirs the card's PIN.

    2. Trezor + built-in Shamir Backup

Every current Trezor (Safe 3, Safe 5, Model One) ships with Shamir Backup built in — no subscription required. Split your seed into N shares (e.g., 5 shares) with any M-of-N recovery threshold (e.g., 3-of-5). Distribute the shares to bank vault, lawyer, family. See our Trezor Safe 3 review.

    3. Coldcard + Sparrow Wallet Shamir

For Bitcoin-only Coldcard users, Sparrow Wallet can implement Shamir Secret Sharing on top of the standard 24-word seed. Fully DIY, no third-party custody, no recurring cost. Requires more setup effort. See our Coldcard Mk4 review.

    4. Multi-location metal backups

Cheapest option: buy 2-3 metal seed plates (Blockplate CA$65 each). Store one at home, one at bank vault, one with a family member in another city. If any one location is compromised, the other two are still recoverable. Zero recurring cost, zero third-party custody. Requires trusted family members.
