Why every Canadian holder should self-custody
Every major crypto collapse of the last decade — Mt. Gox, QuadrigaCX (Canadian!), Celsius, FTX — was a custodial exchange, not a personal wallet. When you self-custody, the counterparty risk goes to zero: no board, no CEO, no jurisdiction risk. The tradeoff is that you take on personal responsibility for the seed phrase. That tradeoff is worth it for anything you're not actively trading.
Where to buy safely in Canada
Always buy directly from the manufacturer. Ledger ships to Canada from France or the US warehouse with 3–7 day delivery; Trezor ships from Czech Republic (7–14 days); Coldcard ships from the Netherlands (5–10 days). Never buy a used or Amazon-warehouse-fulfilled hardware wallet — the supply chain risk is real and the manufacturer will not honor warranty on it.
Setting up your first hardware wallet
- Open the box on a clean surface, alone. Check tamper-evident seals.
- Charge the device fully before setup (Nano X only).
- Install the manufacturer's official app (Ledger Live, Trezor Suite, Coldcard's setup guide).
- Generate a new seed on the device. Write down all 24 words on the metal or paper backup — never digital.
- Verify the seed by re-entering it when the device asks.
- Set a PIN (Ledger/Trezor) or passphrase (Coldcard). Send yourself a small test amount, then send it back to your exchange to verify the receive-and-send flow.
- Only after that test cycle: move your main holdings.
