Our verdict
Coldcard Mk4: Best Bitcoin-only wallet
If you only hold Bitcoin and take security seriously — Coldcard Mk4 is the correct answer. Air-gapped (no USB connection to a computer required), Bitcoin-only firmware (zero altcoin attack surface), open-source, and Canadian-made by Coinkite. Not beginner-friendly like a Ledger, but the Bitcoin community's consensus pick.
What's great
- Air-gapped operation via microSD or QR
- Bitcoin-only firmware — zero altcoin surface
- Fully open-source hardware and firmware
- Made by Coinkite (Canadian company)
- PSBT-native — works with Sparrow, Electrum, Specter
What to know
- Steeper learning curve than Ledger
- Bitcoin only — no altcoin support (a feature, not bug)
- No Bluetooth or phone integration
- Requires Sparrow Wallet or equivalent for daily use
Why the Bitcoin community loves the Coldcard
Every mainstream hardware wallet — Ledger, Trezor, BitBox02 — ships with USB connectivity. That's convenient but adds an attack surface. If your computer is fully compromised, USB devices are potentially exploitable during transaction signing.
Coldcard eliminates the entire USB attack surface. The device signs transactions from a microSD card OR via QR codes (Coldcard Q model). Your computer prepares an unsigned PSBT file, transfers it to microSD, the Coldcard signs it offline, and the signed PSBT goes back to the computer for broadcast. Air-gapped.
Bitcoin-only firmware — the philosophy
Every altcoin app installed on a multi-coin wallet (Ledger, Trezor) is code that could theoretically compromise your Bitcoin private key if it contained a bug. Ledger runs 5,500+ coins' worth of code; Coldcard runs Bitcoin only. Smaller attack surface, smaller audit surface.
For long-term BTC holdings above CA$50,000, this matters. Below that, the practical risk is small enough that a Ledger is fine.
Where to buy safely in Canada
Coinkite (Canadian): store.coinkite.com. Ships from Netherlands warehouse via tracked courier. 5-10 business days to Canada. CA$245 all-in typical.
Never from Amazon, eBay, or resellers. Coinkite has active supply-chain security measures (tamper-evident bags with unique numbers you verify online) that only work when you buy direct.

Setup — what to expect
- Order from Coinkite. Verify tamper-evident bag serial number online on arrival.
- Download Sparrow Wallet (free, open-source) from sparrowwallet.com.
- Set a PIN on the Coldcard (choose a good one — the device has anti-brute-force protection).
- Generate a fresh 24-word seed on-device. Write on paper, transfer to metal backup within 48 hours.
- Connect Coldcard to Sparrow via microSD import — Sparrow reads the extended public key from the card.
- Send a test transaction to yourself. Sign it via the microSD workflow. Confirm on-chain.
Expect a weekend to be fully comfortable. Coldcard is not plug-and-play like a Ledger. That's the tradeoff.
