How to Hold Bitcoin in an RRSP in Canada (2026)

The CRA doesn't allow direct Bitcoin in an RRSP — but you CAN hold Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETFs (BTCC, BTCX, EBIT) inside one, with tax-deferred growth. Here's when it makes sense vs a TFSA, how much to allocate, and the mistakes to avoid.

    The short version

    1. Open an RRSP at any Canadian brokerage that supports TSX-listed ETFs.
    2. Contribute cash — you get a tax deduction for the year.
    3. Buy a Bitcoin ETF (BTCX for lowest fees, BTCC for deepest liquidity).
    4. Growth is tax-deferred. On withdrawal in retirement, you pay income tax at your then-current marginal rate.

RRSP vs TFSA for Bitcoin ETFs — the decision framework

Bitcoin's expected return is high AND highly variable. Locking huge gains inside an RRSP means paying them out as income at your marginal rate on withdrawal. Locking them inside a TFSA means they're tax-free forever.

Rule of thumb: Fill TFSA room first with Bitcoin ETFs, then use RRSP room for lower-return assets like bonds or broad-market equity ETFs. Only use RRSP for Bitcoin if:

    • Your TFSA is already maxed out
    • You're currently in a high (30%+) marginal tax bracket
    • You expect to retire in a materially lower bracket (~15-20%)
    • You need the current-year tax deduction for cash flow reasons

Where to buy Bitcoin ETFs for your RRSP

Same brokerages as for a TFSA:

    • Wealthsimple Trade — free ETF trades, RRSP support included
    • Questrade — commission-free ETF buys, better for active portfolios
    • Big-bank brokerages — RBC Direct, TD Direct, BMO InvestorLine, Scotia iTRADE, National Bank Direct Brokerage

How much of your RRSP should be in Bitcoin?

This is a personal risk-tolerance question and this page is not investment advice. Common frameworks:

    • Conservative: 1–3% of total portfolio. Enough to matter if BTC has strong returns, small enough that a drawdown doesn't threaten retirement.
    • Moderate: 5–10%. The allocation that most institutional Bitcoin research (Fidelity, ARK, Fundstrat) settles on for balanced portfolios.
    • Aggressive: 10%+. Only if you have decades to retirement, high risk tolerance, and other well-diversified holdings.

Whatever the allocation, do not put your Bitcoin allocation into a locked-in RRSP if you'll need to rebalance frequently — you'll pay withholding tax on every withdrawal.

    Which ETF for your RRSP?

    • BTCX (CI Galaxy, 0.40% MER) — lowest cost, best for buy-and-hold RRSP over 20+ years.
    • BTCC (Purpose, 1.00% MER) — highest AUM, best liquidity if you'll rebalance often.
    • EBIT (Evolve, 0.75% MER) — reasonable middle ground.

Not directly. Like the TFSA, RRSPs don't allow direct cryptocurrency holdings. You CAN hold Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETFs (BTCC, BTCX, EBIT) in an RRSP, giving you the same price exposure with tax-deferred growth.
