How to Hold Bitcoin in a TFSA in Canada (2026)

The CRA doesn't let you put Bitcoin itself into a TFSA — but you CAN hold Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETFs (BTCC, BTCX, EBIT) inside one. Same price exposure, zero tax on gains. For most Canadians, this is the only way to hold Bitcoin exposure tax-free.

    The short version

    1. Open a TFSA at a brokerage that supports TSX-listed ETFs (Wealthsimple Trade, Questrade, or any big-bank direct-investing platform).
    2. Contribute cash up to your available TFSA room ($7,500/yr as of 2026; ~$102,000 total if you've never contributed).
    3. Buy shares of a Bitcoin ETF — the three main options are BTCC (Purpose), BTCX (CI Galaxy, lowest MER at 0.40%), or EBIT (Evolve).
    4. Hold. Every dollar of gain inside the TFSA is tax-free forever.

Why not just buy BTC directly on an exchange?

Buying spot BTC on NDAX, Kraken, or Shakepay is cheaper on an annual-fee basis (0% vs the ETF's 0.4-1.0% MER) and gives you self-custody. But every gain is a taxable disposition when you sell. In a TFSA, spot BTC isn't an option — you MUST use an ETF wrapper to get the tax-free treatment.

The math for a 20-year hold on $10,000 with 15% annualized Bitcoin return:

    • BTCX in TFSA (0.40% MER): ~$164,000 tax-free
    • Spot BTC outside TFSA (0% MER, 25% marginal tax on 50% gain): ~$146,000 after tax
    • The tax-free wrapper more than pays for the ETF fee.

Which Bitcoin ETF should you pick for your TFSA?

See our full comparison at Best Bitcoin ETFs in Canada. The three-second answer:

    • Cheapest: BTCX (CI Galaxy, 0.40% MER)
    • Most liquid: BTCC (Purpose, $1.5B AUM)
    • Simplest for a TFSA: either one — both are physically-settled spot BTC ETFs.

Where to open a TFSA for Bitcoin ETFs

    • Wealthsimple Trade — commission-free ETF buys AND sells. Best for beginners.
    • Questrade — commission-free ETF buys ($4.95–$9.95 to sell). Better for active traders.
    • Big-bank brokerages — $9.95/trade typical, useful if you want everything in one place.

Common TFSA + Bitcoin ETF mistakes

    • Over-contributing. Excess contributions cost 1% per month. Check your TFSA room in CRA My Account before contributing.
    • Day-trading in a TFSA. The CRA can (rarely) classify aggressive trading as a business, making the account fully taxable. Buy-and-hold is safe.
    • Buying US-listed BTC ETFs. These pay a 15% withholding tax on distributions that you can't recover inside a TFSA. Stick to TSX-listed ETFs.
    • Withdrawing and re-contributing in the same year. You can withdraw anytime, but the room doesn't restore until January 1 of the following year.

    Frequently asked questions

Not directly. The CRA does not allow cryptocurrencies themselves to be held in a TFSA. However, you CAN hold Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETFs (BTCC, BTCX, EBIT) inside a TFSA — giving you the same price exposure with all gains tax-free and no reporting requirements when you eventually sell.
