How to Move Bitcoin From Any Canadian Exchange to Your Ledger (2026)

The 5-step overview

1. Set up your Ledger (skip if already done — see section below)
2. Grab your BTC receive address from Ledger Live
3. Send a small test transaction (CA$5–10 worth)
4. Once test confirmed, send the full amount
5. Record the transaction ID for your CRA records

End-to-end time: ~45 minutes if you already own a Ledger, ~90 minutes for a first-time setup.

Step 1 — Set up your Ledger

If you don't already have one: Nano S Plus (CA$109) for under CA$10k of BTC, or Nano X (CA$223) for CA$10k+ or mobile use. Buy direct from Ledger.com — never Amazon or a reseller.

Step 2 — Get your BTC receive address

1. Open Ledger Live → choose your Bitcoin account → click Receive.
2. Connect your device and unlock it.
3. Ledger Live will display a Bitcoin address AND show the same address on your Ledger's screen.
4. Verify character-by-character that the on-device address matches Ledger Live. This defeats clipboard-swap malware.
5. Approve the address on the device.

Copy the address (a string starting with bc1 for native SegWit — the default and cheapest to send to).

Step 3 — Send a small test transaction first

Non-negotiable. Even seasoned holders test every new address before sending real amounts. On your exchange of choice (walkthroughs below), withdraw CA$5–10 worth of BTC to your Ledger address. Wait for 1 confirmation (usually 10–30 minutes). Verify in Ledger Live that the tx arrived.

Step 4 — Exchange-by-exchange withdrawal walkthroughs

Step 5 — Send the full amount

Once the test confirms in Ledger Live, repeat Step 4 with the full amount. On a large withdrawal (over CA$50,000 equivalent), split into 2–3 transactions across a few hours to keep the on-chain footprint reasonable and give you more time to catch errors.

Warning: Do NOT copy-paste an address from an old email or notes app. Always re-generate a fresh receive address in Ledger Live and re-verify it on the device screen. Clipboard-swap malware exists and looks like exactly this: a legitimate-looking address that arrived from a legitimate app.

Step 6 — Record for the CRA

Save these for your tax records:

• The exchange withdrawal receipt (screenshot + email)
• The on-chain transaction ID (txid)
• The withdrawal fee paid in BTC and its CAD value at the time
• The date and market price of BTC when you sent it

Under CARF (2026), Canadian exchanges report your account activity to the CRA automatically. If your exchange balance drops to zero without a matching disposition on your tax return, expect a review.
