Not investment advice — do your own homework.

This article is a guide to help you understand what's out there. Cryptocurrency is a highly volatile asset class — you could lose your entire investment. Always research exactly what you're buying, understand the risks, and make your own decision. If you need advice tailored to your situation, speak to a licensed Canadian financial advisor. See our full risk disclaimer for the complete legal notice.

Start here if you don't have a Ledger yet

Buy direct from Ledger.com: Nano S Plus (CA$109) for a first Bitcoin device, or Nano X (CA$223) if you want to manage from a phone. Ships to Canada in 3–7 days. Never buy from Amazon or resellers.

Step 1 — Install Ledger Live

Download from ledger.com/ledger-live. Never from a search result — phishing sites impersonate Ledger's installer regularly. Available for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Step 2 — Initialize your Ledger

    1. Unbox the device. Verify the tamper-evident seal is intact.
    2. Plug in via USB-C. Follow on-device prompts.
    3. Choose "Set up as new device." The Ledger will generate a random 24-word seed.
    4. Write down the 24 words on paper first, in order. Do NOT photograph. Do NOT type into any device.
    5. Verify the seed by re-entering when prompted.
    6. Set a PIN (4-8 digits).
    7. Within 48 hours, transfer the seed to a metal backup plate (Blockplate, Cryptosteel, or similar).

Step 3 — Install the Bitcoin app on the device

In Ledger Live: My Ledger tab → search BitcoinInstall. Takes about 30 seconds. This installs the Bitcoin cryptographic library on the device — the app is what signs transactions.

If you also want Ethereum, USDC, or other coins, install those apps separately. Nano S Plus has ~1.5 MB of app storage; Nano X has 128 KB but supports app-manager swapping.

Step 4 — Add a Bitcoin account in Ledger Live

    1. Portfolio → Add account
    2. Choose Bitcoin
    3. Choose Native SegWit (bech32) — the default. Lowest transaction fees, addresses start with bc1.
    4. Ledger Live scans the blockchain for your existing balance (empty for a new account).
    5. Name the account (e.g. "Long-term BTC hold").

Step 5 — Send yourself a test transaction

Get a receive address (see next section for the verification step). Send yourself CA$5–10 of BTC from your Canadian exchange. Wait for 1 confirmation. Verify it appears in Ledger Live. Now you know the round-trip works.

For the exchange-by-exchange withdrawal walkthrough, see How to move Bitcoin from any Canadian exchange to Ledger.

    Verifying receive addresses on-device

This is the single most important habit. Every time you generate a Bitcoin receive address in Ledger Live, your Ledger's screen ALSO shows the address. They must match character-by-character.

Why: clipboard-swap malware watches your clipboard for Bitcoin addresses. When it sees one, it swaps in the attacker's address. If you copy from Ledger Live and paste into your exchange withdrawal without verifying on-device, you're not verifying the actual output address.

Habit: after every "Receive" click, check the first 4 and last 4 characters on the device screen match Ledger Live. Approve on-device.

Buying Bitcoin directly in Ledger Live — spoiler, don't

Ledger Live has a Buy tab powered by MoonPay and Ramp Network. Both accept Canadian debit/credit cards. The effective cost is 4-5% between the payment processor and the exchange spread.

This is fine for a first CA$50 to test the flow. For any meaningful amount, buy on a Canadian exchange (0.2%-1.5% total cost) and withdraw to your Ledger.

When to graduate to Sparrow Wallet

Ledger Live is perfect for 90% of Bitcoin holders. Move to Sparrow Wallet if you want:

    • Coin control — pick exactly which UTXOs to spend from
    • Fee bumping (RBF) — speed up stuck transactions
    • PSBT support — required for multisig setups
    • Whirlpool CoinJoin — privacy tooling
    • Connect to your own Bitcoin node — full sovereignty

Sparrow uses your Ledger as the signing device — it doesn't replace the hardware wallet. Download from sparrowwallet.com.

Common Ledger Live problems on Canadian setups

    • Device not recognized on Windows. Almost always a USB-C cable issue — try a data cable, not a charge-only cable.
    • "Locked device" on iPhone Bluetooth pairing. Restart both device and phone; ensure the Ledger Bluetooth is enabled in Settings.
    • Manager tab shows "Missing app" after firmware update. Reinstall the Bitcoin app — firmware updates sometimes remove installed apps to free space. Your BTC is not affected; only the app is reinstalled.

    Frequently asked questions

Not strictly — you can use your Ledger with Sparrow Wallet, Electrum, or Wasabi as the signing device, with Ledger Live not installed at all. But Ledger Live is the smoothest starting point: it handles firmware updates, Bitcoin app installation, and account setup in one flow. Most Canadians should start with Ledger Live and graduate to Sparrow if they want more advanced BTC features.
