Why isn't Binance / KuCoin / Gemini on the list of exchanges I can use?

All three have withdrawn from Canada under CSA pressure. Binance withdrew in 2023, KuCoin was ordered out by the OSC the same year, and Gemini paused Canadian operations in September 2024. Existing user accounts remain in withdraw-only mode. Don't sign up for offshore workarounds — you lose CIRO investor protection.

What is CARF and why does it affect crypto exchanges in Canada?

The Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) is an OECD standard the CRA adopted with 2026 tax reporting. Canadian crypto platforms must now report account balances and annual transaction totals to the CRA automatically. Assume every trade you make on a regulated Canadian exchange is visible to the CRA.

Don't use restricted exchanges via VPN

Signing up for a Binance, KuCoin, or Gemini account from Canada via VPN violates the platform's terms of service AND leaves you outside CIRO investor protection. If the platform freezes your account, you have no recourse. Stick to a CSA-authorized Canadian exchange.
