How Canadian exchange prices differ from the reference
The CoinGecko price above is a volume-weighted average of major global exchanges — the closest thing to a "true" Bitcoin price. What you actually pay on a Canadian exchange includes their spread:
| Exchange | Typical spread over reference | All-in effective cost |
|---|---|---|
| NDAX | ~0.05% | 0.25% |
| Kraken Pro | ~0.05% | 0.31% |
| Bitbuy Pro | ~0.05% | 0.25% |
| Bitbuy Express | ~1.5% | 1.7% |
| Shakepay | ~1.5% | 1.5% |
| Newton | ~0.5-1% | ~0.7% |
| Wealthsimple Crypto | ~1.5-2% | 1.5-2% |

How to read the BTC price in CAD
Bitcoin's price is set globally in USD then converted to CAD using the real-time FX rate. That means two things move the CAD price: the underlying BTC price AND the USD/CAD exchange rate. A stable BTC/USD price with a weakening CAD dollar shows up as "BTC going up" when denominated in CAD.
Bitcoin price milestones in Canadian dollars
- Nov 2021 all-time high: ~CA$85,000 (BTC/USD $69k, CAD strong at 0.79)
- Nov 2022 low: ~CA$21,000 (BTC/USD $16k, CAD ~0.74)
- Mar 2024 all-time high: ~CA$99,000 (BTC/USD $73k, CAD ~0.73)
- 2025-2026 range: ~CA$85,000 – CA$150,000+ as Bitcoin ETF flows and 2024 halving impact accumulate
Best time of day to buy in Canada
BTC/CAD tends to have thinner liquidity during Canadian business hours (US Eastern morning to close). The practical impact for retail buyers is small — you'll typically see a 0.1% wider spread mid-day Wednesday than at 3 AM Sunday. Interac e-Transfer processes 24/7 on the major Canadian banks, so timing rarely matters for a $500 purchase.
